News 3 Now is looking for a Chief Photographer to join our team of ambitious journalists. We are looking for a leader who can balance managing a team of talented photojournalists while maintaining the gear necessary to tell great visual stories, and also nurturing the staff’s skills to find, craft, create and deliver important and visually engaging content as part of our high-quality, high-energy newscasts and digital assets. What you’ll do:
- Manage a team of photojournalists, providing regular feedback, coaching, direction and development for each member.
- Understand the tenants of great photography, high-level visuals and powerful storytelling and enabling the staff to deliver these daily.
- Set the standard for high-level photojournalism and maintain those standards throughout our photojournalist and reporter crews.
- Assist in onboarding new employees who use cameras and editing gear.
- Monitor, coordinate and perform maintenance on station vehicles, including live trucks.
- Monitor and maintain the station’s editing software system.
- Monitor and maintain the station’s photography equipment, including maintaining a future list of needed tools and equipment.
- Lead innovation related to new types of photography, editing gear, software, and tools.
- Shoot and edit video and sound for all our linear and digital platforms.
- Leverage creative graphic and production techniques to boost video and audio storytelling.
- Work with reporters to deliver engaging live reports, especially in breaking news situations.
- Work well collaboratively and individually under pressure and in a changing environment.
- Work with the assignment desk, reporters, producers, and managers to meet deadlines.
- Build sources in the community to better understand viewers’ interests and needs.
- Work with other newsroom managers to deliver on audience goals and strategy.
What you’ll bring:
- 5-6 years’ experience as a broadcast photojournalist. Experience in management is a plus.
- A cheerful outlook, open mind and a passion for great journalism
- Experience as an editor and photojournalist in both hard news and feature reporting
- Experience with non-linear editing
- Experience working with production equipment, including live gear and ENG.
- Ability to work flexible and non-traditional hours, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and overtime hours.
- Must interact professionally, respectfully and effectively with co-workers and external organizations.
- Working knowledge of newsroom software is a plus.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and to sit, walk or stand for extended periods.
- Must have a valid U.S. driver’s license and a clean driving history.
