Editorial Intern
Location: Remote/Madison, Wisconsin (Applicants with a Wisconsin address and a knowledge of Madison’s culture, community and geography preferred.)
Pay Rate: $12/hour
Hours/week: 15 hours
Duties
Pitches and writes 8+ reported web-exclusive stories per month
Fact-checks Madison Magazine print stories
Curates and writes monthly arts and culture e-newsletter
Contributes to editorial projects
Opportunities to write for the print magazine
Description
Madison Magazine interns gain valuable experience in journalism and online publishing through a variety of duties. Interns pitch, research, interview sources and write articles for the magazine’s online publication, with opportunities to gain print bylines. Duties also include fact-checking print magazine stories and working on special projects, as assigned, with our editorial staff. Past Madison Magazine interns have gone on to work for newspapers, magazines, trade publications, UW–Madison and American Girl, freelance for national publications and work for our company’s own WISC-TV and Channel3000.com.
The ideal candidate would be a student or recent graduate in the field of journalism, communications, English or a related field. You must possess strong writing skills and the ability to work independently and efficiently. Applicants must have access to a reliable computer with internet connection and Microsoft Word. We’re looking for an excellent communicator with polite and professional phone and email skills, who also possesses strong magazine style and news judgment skills. Prior experience with fact checking, editing or AP Style is helpful but not required. The ability to meet deadlines is crucial.
